Scale Abilities is a specialist consulting company, and we're currently seeking intelligent Linux Systems Administrators to support one of our Financial Services clients. The successful Linux Systems Administrator will have the opportunity to work within a stimulating environment, but also to extend your skills into Linux/Oracle database clusters, and onwards into the consulting market.
For those with the aptitude and desire, the opportunity is there to develop the role towards a full consulting position. Successful candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, a sense of humour, and a huge will to learn. You will also be a voracious problem solver!
Technically, you will have the following skills: * Strong shell scripting (ksh/bash essential, perl a bonus) * Strong operational and administrative knowledge of Apache, JBOSS, Tomcat and MySQL * Any Oracle experience an advantage * Strong networking knowledge from a Linux perspective * Reasonable knowledge of networking in general * Any clusters experience an advantage * Exposure to SAN infrastructure (fabrics) and EMC Clariion an advantage * 3+ years Linux/UNIX administration experience, demonstrable knowledge level
In addition, you should: * Currently live within a one hour commute of the Kingston-upon-Thames/Tolworth area * Hold a current UK driving license * Possess unrestricted authorisation to work in UK * Have experience liaising with external vendors and logging support calls * Take great pride in the standard of your work * Be highly self-motivated and able to work with the minimum of supervision * Have a naturally proactive nature * Take ownership and deliver results * Have good knowledge of Open Source packages * Be standards-driven * Be a strong believer in automation * Possess excellent communication skills
Your daily duties would be to ensure the smooth operation of two distinct sets of Linux servers - one that powers a mission-critical B2B web application, and the other that runs as an Oracle database cluster.
Included in this are: * Maintaining a secure environment * Support 24/7 operations, including an on-call rota * Capable of following change control and documentation standards * Management of product interdependencies and support/certification matrices * Maintenance and develeopment of comprehensive monitoring infrastructure * Pro-active monitoring of all systems * Capacity planning reporting and trend analysis * Management of exisiting 'Standard Build' policies, including review and testing of new releases and producing modified build environment including all tested and certified products * Replacement and rebuild of failed servers * First line review of bugs and crashes * Preparation, logging and follow-up of support calls * Installation and maintenance of hardware * Support for corporate software releases
